Location
North of the centre, on the Petulu road
Ubud gets busier every year, and most of that happens within a kilometre of the palace. We are outside it, on a village road where the traffic stops after dark.
Getting here and getting about
- From the airport
- Ngurah Rai International is roughly an hour and a half by car, longer in the late afternoon. We can have a driver waiting.
- Into central Ubud
- Around ten minutes. Grab and Gojek both pick up and drop off at the gate, and the fare into town is small.
- On two wheels
- We can have a scooter delivered to the property. The road south into Ubud is direct; the lanes north through the rice fields are the better ride.
- On foot
- Warungs and a small shop are within walking distance in Petulu. The heron trees are along the same road.

Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary
About 15 minutes south
A forested temple complex in Padangtegal, home to several hundred long-tailed macaques and three Hindu temples dating from the fourteenth century. Go early, keep sunglasses and loose bags out of reach.
Tegallalang rice terraces
About 15 minutes north
Steep terraced fields carved into the valley at Ceking, irrigated by the subak system that has organised Balinese water sharing for a thousand years. The light is best before nine.

Late each afternoon white herons return in numbers to roost in the trees along Petulu's main road. It happens on our doorstep and costs nothing.
